Medications dispensed in a hospital are typically prepared by the pharmacy. 10 to 20% of the time, however, medications are given “stat” without pharmacist preparation and review. In these cases, nurses are required to calculate the appropriate drug volume on the spot. On-the-spot calculations are also required when unit dose medications are unavailable and in hospitals without 24-hour pharmacy service.
InformMed’s product, the pac2, is a ruggedized handheld computer specifically designed to automate point-of-care dose calculations. The pac2 – designed for nurses by nurses – has a learning curve measured in minutes. In addition to its primary function of calculating doses, the pac2 also checks each dose against the hospital’s safe therapeutic ranges and provides critical medication administration information.
Pharmacists use the companion Data Manager application to manage the drug library. This library defines the safe dose ranges for medications as well as internal procedures and protocols for administration.
